It’s like the old Netflix, where you got DVDs in the mail. Except it’s peer-to-peer, or friend-to-friend. Find a movie you like, and borrow that DVD. All you pay is 73¢ for a stamp to get it to you. Then you mail it back.
Add DVDs, or other disc formats, to this site (a rough prototype of the eventual service) to grow the community of movie-lovers and movie-exchangers.
We believe there’s still a place for physical media in our modern, instant-gratification world. It’s nice to own the thing you love, and it’s even nicer to share the thing you love with other people. There’s something more intentional about putting a disc into the player and settling back to invest the time to watch a story perfectly curated by its creator. Speaking of those creators, don’t take our word for it – here’s what Christopher Nolan and Guillermo del Toro said about the importance of physical media. Oh! Also, bonus features – director commentary, behind-the-scenes stuff! You can get all that again thanks to freeming.
Don’t get us wrong, the streaming services are great. Instant gratification, lots of choices. We’re not saying give them up. But maybe pause one or two for a bit and supplement them with freeming? When you add up all the monthly fees you’re paying, it adds up to a lot. But the only cost for freeming is postage - 73¢ each way. And there are no monthly fees that keep going up, and there are no ads. And there are many titles that aren’t even available on streaming. Right now, at this very moment, freeming has some of those you can borrow.
get something fun in the mail again
It is simply delightful to see a DVD from a buddy in your mailbox. We need more connection, and this is a great way to get it.
The more people who participate in freeming, the more our library expands. It’s a chicken or egg scenario, for sure. But eventually, we could surpass what any other source provides.
What comes after is a cool little app that makes all this even easier. More to come on that. Thanks.
We’ve got an explanation right here.
